The College & Brief  History
Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) is the prime military institute of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. It is a tri Service training institution with three seperate Wings for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The high reputation of Mirpur among the professionals of the world is based on a well-earned mark as a military educational centre with the aim of preparing selected officers world-wide for the better performance of their duties in peace and war.
 
The College was inaugurated by late president Zia on 30 December 1977 with a batch of 30 students from all three services of Bangladesh Armed Forces and Bangladesh Police with the assistance of a British Military Advisory Team. The College ran short courses of 6 months duration jointly for the three services for the first 3 years. In 1980 the course duration was increased to 10 months, opening a seperate Air Wing and also inviting overseas students to attend the course. Naval wing found its seperate entity in 1982. Since 1977, the course strength has more than quadrupled. The Staff College has been affiliated to the National University of Bangladesh since 1993, and the students qualifying from the institute are awarded the degree of Master of Defence Studies. The duration of the course is 44 weeks.

The prime minister of Bangladesh, who is also the defence minister, heads the governing body of the college. The other members of the body are the chiefs of the three services, secretaries of the ministries of defence, foreign affairs and finance, principal staff officer to the armed forces division, commandant of the college, and the vice-chancellors of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University and National University.

Over the last 21 years a total of 1,554 officers, including 284 officers from more than 26 friendly countries, graduated from the institute. As of today countries like Bahrain, Brazil, Brunei, China, France, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, USA and Zambia have sent their officers to the Staff College courses. So far representatives from 29 countries have attended course at Mirpur.
 
The College is situated at Mirpur, approximately 16 km north-west of the city centre of Dhaka, the capital city and 10 km west of Zia International Airport (ZIA).

General Information
 
DSCSC is a tri-service institution, devotes 40% of the curriculum to joint service matters and subjects, while 60% covers individual service studies. The syllebus covers approximately 2000 periods 40 min each. Core subjects includes staff duties, tactics, management, strategy, logistic, joint- single service and combined operations/warfare, leadership, counter insurgency operations, operations other than the war etc. There are number of research work that the students have to undertake both individually and in groups on employment of force and force structuring, professional matters/subjects, strategic studies, socio-economic topics etc. Students are required to go through the military decision making process (DMP) both individually and in teams. To enhance awareness, students are also exposed to relevant aspects of strategic and international studies. Special emphasis is laid on the studies relating to South Asia. UN peacekeeping  also figures prominantly in curriculam. Above all, learning through the interaction amongst the students from different countries with varried experience and eminent scholars, analysts, specialists from home and abroad remain to be one of the important components in the curriculam.
 
Aim of Staff Course
 
"To provide professional military education to selected mid-career officers of the three services and to prepare them for assumption of increasing responsibilities both in command and staff appointments"
 
Objectives of Staff Course
 
Following broad objectives are sought for through joint service training:
 
*   Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
*   Research information, solve problems logically and make sound decisions.
*   Understand the principles of command, leadership and mangement as applicable for armed forces.
*   Understand the outline structure, genral capabilities, roles and training policy of Bangladesh Armed Forces.
*   Understand the main Issues geverning Bangladesh national policy, with perticular reference to defence.
*   Analyse and understand the main international, strategic, political and economic issues which are of interest to Bangladesh with special reference to South Asian affairs.
*   Understand the principles of war and the basic concepts of military strategy.
*   Understand the basic principles and techniques of joint service operations.
*   Understand the principles of United Nation peace keeping Operations(UNPKO).
*   Understand the basic principles of land, sea and air warfare.
*   Understand the basic principles of counter insurgency operations.
*   Understand the basic principles and mechanism involved in desaster management operations and role of the armed forces can play in aid to civil administration.
*   Famiiarize with nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) warfare and various NBC protective measures.
*   Understand the process of defence policy formulation.

Selection Procedure of Officers for Staff Course
 
An entrance examination is conducted every year under the overall supervision of  training directorate of respective sister services. Officers having 8 to 14 years of ground service can appear the examination. The preparation for this examination is probably the most labourious job for an officer in his careeer. Usually officers require to have a period of six months to one year for the preparation. However, they usually carry out the study alongwith their regular official duties and comittments. For 2004 staff course a total number of 516 officers (428 army , 58 navy and 30 airforce ) appeared the entrance examination from three services and 99 officers ( 70 army, 13 navy and 16 ) were qualified.
For army officers the there are four subjects those were:
 
*       Tactics.( Includes all operation of war)
*       Military History.( Includes the pratial History of WW2, Bangladesh war of Liberation, Islamic Battles and regional campaign)
*       Military Science.
*       Military Essay. (Includes World Affairs, Bangladesh and Regional Affairs)
 
For Navy Officers the subjects were:
*       Maritime Strategy.
*       Naval History andoperation. (Includes WW1, WW2, Regional wars and Limited Armed conflict upto 1991 gulf war.)
*       Law of the Sea.
*       Military Eassy. (Includes World Affairs, Bangladesh and Regional Affairs)
 
For airfirce officers the subjects were:
*       Air Power.
*       Military History. (includes WW1, WW2, Evaluation of air power since 1903, Gulf War, OIF Iraq, OEF Afganistan, Kosvo war, Vietnum etc.)
*       Military Essay. (Includes Command and leaderships, Airforce Subjects)
*       Current Affairs. (Includes World Affairs, Bangladesh and Regional Affairs)
 
Each subject bears 150 marks and offers 4 hours to appear the examination.

Accomodation and Officers Mess facilities.  All  officers are provided with a flat of 2200 sq ft(+) or room in mess (for Singles).
Telephone, PABX, Fax and Postal Facilities.   Available to each flat.
Internet Facilities.  Broadband Connections are avilable to every flat/rooms.
Cable Connection Facilities with 55 channels. this includes BBC, CNN, DW, PTV, DD, STAR, HBO, ESPN, CNTV and other regional channels.
Children School Facilities.  There is a kindergarten within the campus. Other international schools of english medium is within the city in close proximity.
Health & Medical Facilities.  Within the campus there is a Medical Inspection room and the Combined Military Hospital in the Cantonment is always at your service.
Photoshop Facilities. College provide photographer in all offical events. You can ask for you private use. 
Banking, Courier and Credit Card Facilities. Within Campus there is a Government Bank. You can have STANDARD CHARTERED or other Credit Cards. The Teller Machine is about a mile away from your college.
Transport Facilities.  You will be provided with transport for you and your family use regular basis. Special requirements are also taken care.
Sports, Swimming pool & Gym Facilities.  Tennis, Squash, Basket Ball, Volley ball, Badmionton, Soccer, Billiard etc are played within the campus. You can play Golf, Bowling in the city. A 50 meter Swimming Pool with diving facilities are in the campus. A Gym with all modern machines are also in the sports complex.
Boating, Canoeing Facilities.  An artificial lake surrounded by gardens is situated within the campus that provide daily boating and canoeing facilities.
Children Park facilities.  It is within your living area. You may take them to a Theme Park or Children Park at city having all modern amusements.
Home Service Repair Facilities.  Just call them, they will be on your door.
Misc Administrative facilities.  Washing, Laundry, Cleaning, Canteen Service are within your Living area.
